Workshops
UIST 2026 workshops will run on Monday, November 2, 2026. Full-day workshops meet 9:00 AM–5:00 PM; each half-day workshop meets either in the morning (9:00 AM–12:15 PM) or the afternoon (1:45–5:00 PM). Room assignments will be announced closer to the conference — see the Monday schedule for how workshops fit into the rest of the day.
All full-day workshops will be held at the conference venue, the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, 400 Renaissance Center, Detroit, MI 48243 — see the Attending page for venue and accommodation details.
All half-day workshops will be held at the University of Michigan Detroit Center , located at 3663 Woodward Ave., Suite 150, in Midtown Detroit, about 2.5 miles (4 km) north of the conference venue. To get there, take the free QLine streetcar north along Woodward Avenue from the Congress Street station (a short walk from the conference venue) to the MLK Boulevard / Mack Avenue stop at the Detroit Center — streetcars run every 15 minutes or less — or see directions from the conference venue on Google Maps .

Description
Flavor is an embodied, multimodal, and culturally situated design material. However, computational flavor systems often represent food through ingredients, chemical compounds, recipe corpora, or machine-generated recommendations, leaving limited space for people to document and iterate their subjective experiences. We propose Bobapedia, a full-day participatory workshop exploring how computational interfaces scaffold collaborative flavor creation of a popular drink — boba tea. We will use an LLM-supported Flavor Wiki system to record participants' sensory impressions, personal and cultural associations, flavor interpretations, and finally guide them to iteratively create customized drinks.

Description
The powerful convergence of wearables, robotics, extended reality, and smart environments is expanding the design space for cyber-physical systems (CPS) that support and augment human abilities in daily life. By sensing real-world contexts, modeling user needs, and providing situated assistance, these systems can improve accessibility for people with disabilities while enhancing broader human abilities such as perception, memory, learning, and mobility. However, realizing this potential requires addressing key challenges in context sensing, user modeling, adaptive interaction, privacy, and evaluation to ensure that CPS are reliable and effective in real-world contexts. This workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners across HCI, AI, wearables, robotics, XR, smart environments, accessibility, and ability augmentation to examine shared strategies and challenges for designing accessibility- and ability-centered CPS. Through panel discussions, interactive demos, and mixed-group design activities, participants will identify recurring design principles, technical challenges, and future directions for CPS that support and augment human abilities in real-world settings.

Description
Writing assistants have become increasingly multidimensional and sophisticated, fueled by advances in AI and interaction design. As this landscape expands, it is timely to consider how different underlying technologies (e.g., text analytics, LLMs), interaction designs (e.g., next-word prediction, chatbots, material interaction), and design goals (e.g., productivity, friction) fit together into broader ecosystems of tools and workflows. Future writing tools should support writers' idiosyncratic, multi-tool, and social writing processes. In this hands-on, systems-centric workshop, we challenge the UIST community to explore and develop ecosystems of writing assistants through the lens of interoperability. Participants will engage in a highly interactive tool-swapping collaborative writing exercise where research and commercial systems are used side-by-side. Through playful provocation and intentional defamiliarization, participants will identify system interplay friction and collaboratively outline design guidelines for building adaptable writing assistants that enrich diverse workflows and integrate into lasting technological ecosystems.

Description
Agentic AI coding tools can now reimplement, or “revibe,” the systems described in research papers. Revibing could give the HCI community what it has long lacked: prior systems that can be run, act as strong baselines, and be extended. However, before revibing becomes common practice, our community must shape norms around how revibes are conducted, how they are verified, and what widespread revibing means for how HCI research is practiced, shared, and valued. Our workshop brings together the UIST community to discuss and form these early norms. Participants will revibe a classic UIST system in a hands-on session, brainstorm evaluation approaches for revibed artifacts, and discuss what revibing means for research methods, open science, and the future of HCI system contributions. The workshop aims to foster a community around revibing by consolidating guidance and outputs into a shared community document.

Description
This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners in HCI, eXtended Reality (XR), and AI to explore how generative AI can lower barriers to creating XR experiences. Generative AI can now turn rough ideas into images, videos, and apps within minutes, yet creating XR experiences remains demanding. XR creations must be grounded in physical space, previewed before they exist, steered through multimodal user inputs, co-created across heterogeneous devices, inspected for AI errors that unfold in interaction, and shared beyond a single headset. Through a keynote, participant demos, and a collaborative design space mapping activity, we will map existing systems onto these challenges, derive design considerations, and distill a shared research agenda. The resulting design space map will be published on the workshop website and continuously expanded through community contributions.

Description
At its core, the maker movement is driven by a highly adaptable community that repurposes new creative technologies through the open exchange of skills and knowledge. However, recent advances in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled makers to synthesize, on demand, the knowledge traditionally curated by the maker community. As AI tools become increasingly integrated into creative ecosystems, this workshop aims to chart new directions for maker-centric tools by unpacking the concept of the “AI-augmented maker”. Bringing together interdisciplinary experts across fabrication, AI, and community-centered design, this workshop will explore how integrating on-demand AI to different facets of making can preserve—or disrupt—the conditions that give the maker movement its meaning.

Description
Immersive experiences are increasingly moving beyond conventional vibrotactile and force-based feedback toward multisensory forms of interaction. This workshop examines the intersection of generative AI and such nontraditional haptics, asking how AI might support the authoring, prototyping, personalization, and evaluation of multisensory feedback that is often difficult to describe, simulate, or standardize. The workshop will combine live demonstrations of recent multisensory interfaces, short talks on how these systems were developed, and group discussions on where generative AI may—or may not—change the process of creating haptic experiences. Our goal is to identify emerging research gaps, design vocabularies, and potential evaluation methods for future AI-mediated multisensory interfaces.

Description
We define personalized computing as a class of systems that both know about you deeply and can act on that information to serve you better. Longstanding work in HCI has built up systems that know about the user, but that knowledge remains largely inert and siloed. For example, our desktop computers, browsers, and web applications minimally adapt to users with ranking and recommendation but generally wait on a user's directive to take action. In contrast, modern AI systems now have the ability to not only consume massive amounts of unstructured data to better know the user, but also take intelligent, proactive action on this information. This development has enabled systems that observe users and learn strong user models that can power personalized AI assistance, bespoke tools and interfaces, and personal agents acting on the user's behalf. With these shifts towards a realizable paradigm of personalized computing, we believe our community ought to discuss and envision: what will interaction look like when our computers know more about us than we know about ourselves, and can take meaningful action for us? Will the design of such interactive systems require manual authoring and handcrafted abstractions, or will they succeed only by accruing ever more user data? In an interaction paradigm where information is fundamentally offloaded to AI, how do we ensure that these systems preserve user privacy, agency, control, and understanding? Through this workshop, we aim to explore these questions and advance the development of personalized computing systems.
Drawing on Materials and Processes: A Hands-on Workshop on Building Creative Tools with Grain Spaces

In this workshop, we will use the grain space framework to build novel creative tools for pen plotters. After learning the definition of a grain space and discussing it, attendees will curate a grain for pen plotting, define a parametric space for it, and implement it as a manipulable representation. We will discuss how HCI researchers can use the grain space approach to guide and refine their systems for working with creative and novel computational materials.

Physical AI, systems that perceive, reason, and act through actuated bodies, moves interaction off the screen and into the space around us. Wearable robots and on-skin interfaces now operate inside the wearer's intimate space, while foundation models of robotics and simulation platforms scale embodied agents into shared social and public settings. What has not scaled is our understanding of how such systems should occupy human spaces and interact with them in intimate, personal, social, and public zones. This workshop explores what proxemics means for Physical AI by discussing perspectives on design, agency, adaptation, and ethics.

Description
Human dexterity enables versatile and precise manipulation in everyday life. Recent advances in wearable and mobile computing have opened new ways to augment this dexterity. These efforts go beyond traditional assistive tools—whose primary function has been to restore or enhance strength—and instead aim to support more precise and complex performance across diverse domains, such as playing musical instruments or performing precision tasks at a workbench. A range of technologies has been explored, including multimodal sensory cues, adaptive learning schemes, robots, and exoskeletons. Yet individual projects remain limited in scope, often confined to a specific technology or application domain. Because dexterity is inherently multifaceted, no single perspective is likely to capture it fully—yet UIST has not seen a dedicated effort to bring these perspectives together. We therefore propose this workshop, framing the topic as a broad goal: augmenting human dexterity. We aim to bring together researchers, including those from mechanical engineering, neuroscience, learning science, domain-specific expertise, to discuss what dexterity entails and how technology might support it in a more holistic way. Through interdisciplinary talks, interactive demonstrations, and collaborative discussions, we hope to map out a broad research agenda in this direction.
