Attendees from Developing Countries

The virtual nature of UIST 2020 and 2021 has resulted in a unique opportunity for the UIST community to broaden its attendance diversity because participants are no longer required to travel to the conference to hear about the innovative research and work that we are doing. To further encourage those who may not usually attend UIST to participate in this year’s events, we offer two new programs:

UIST Reduced Registration Rate: If you are currently studying, teaching, or doing research in a developing country (https://www.isi-web.org/capacity-building/developing-countries), you are eligible to register for UIST at a reduced rate. The reduced registration rate for students is $25 USD. The reduced registration rate for non-students is $50 USD. Please complete this form https://forms.gle/6uJKP7u3xBpsHSmP7 to receive instructions about how to register for UIST at these discounted rates.

UIST Registration Scholarship: The UIST organizing committee is pleased to offer 30 Registration Scholarships to student attendees who are currently studying in a developing country to cover their registration costs. To be eligible for a Registration Scholarship, you must be a high school or post-secondary (i.e., undergraduate or graduate) student studying in a developing country and a registered SIGCHI member. For more details about SIGCHI membership, please see https://sigchi.org/get-involved/membership/; note a discounted SIGCHI membership fee for developing countries. To apply and receive a registration scholarship, please contact Diversity and Inclusion Chairs (diversity2021@uist.org).

FAQ

If UIST 2021 is virtual, why is there a registration fee?

When UIST is held in a physical location, planning typically begins well over a year before the conference is held. During this time, contracts are signed with venues and paid for, catering is selected and paid for, poster boards are rented, AV support is attained and paid for, and so on. These costs are remunerated using a combination of funds from sponsorships, grants, and attendee registrations. UIST does not generate a profit when a conference is held.

Although UIST 2021 has moved to a virtual format and many of these tangible expenses are no longer relevant, there are still several expenses associated with running a virtual conference. Some of these expenses include:

  • Accessibility services and software testing
  • The use of PCS as a submission and review portal
  • The use of CVENT as a registration portal
  • Publication fees for preparing and including accepted papers and videos in the ACM Digital Library
  • Enterprise licenses for software such as Zoom
  • Website development and servers (e.g., to develop online galleries and forms, voting software, etc.)
  • Prizes for the Student Innovation Contest
  • Creation of the Lasting Impact Award and Best Paper Award Plaques

While SIGCHI and the ACM have agreed to fund some of these costs, the remainder of the expenses will be paid from sponsorships and registration fees. We have worked diligently to reduce our expenses as much as possible while ensuring that we maintain a balance between the attendee experience and registration costs.

What is the cancellation policy?

Since registration will give you almost immediate access to pre-prints of the technical program, a strict no-cancellation policy will be applied this year.

I want to attend UIST 2021, but I am unemployed, have no financial support from my institution or company to attend conferences, or am an independent researcher, artist, or designer. Is there any support available for me to attend?

We understand that this year and the last has been a challenging and trying year for everyone. Thus, we have made a limited number of compassionate waivers available to support the attendance of some attendees. If you would like to apply for a compassionate waiver, please complete this online form: https://forms.gle/FJYWavx9Kx478sri9.

I’m not able to attend all three days of UIST 2021. Can I only register for one or two days?

Unfortunately, we are not offering per-day registration this year. Attendees must register to attend all three days of the conference.

I can only attend one day of the UIST conference. Can I transfer my registration to a colleague or student for the remaining days?

Each UIST registration is only valid for the user who registered. Please do not share your registration information with anyone.

Can I still get a certificate to prove my attendance at UIST 2021 after the event?

Yes. Please email the UIST 2021 Registration Chairs (registration2021@uist.org) to receive your certificate. Please note that the certificate will be only issued after UIST 2021 has concluded.

Will there be any discounts for group registration?

UIST does not provide any group discounts; however, some sponsorship levels offer a fixed number of free registrations to sponsoring institutions. Please contact the UIST 2021 Sponsorship chairs (sponsorship2021@uist.org) for more details.
